Co-Curricular Activities and Clubs

Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities to encourage fair play and teamwork. Crofton House offers a variety of co-curricular activities before school, during lunch hours, and after school. Every student is encouraged to participate in activities and choose wisely so that she can participate fully. Co-curricular activities include fine arts, such as primary and junior choirs, art, crafts, recorder groups, and concerts; athletics, such as cross country, basketball, volleyball, running, track and field, and intramurals; and academic clubs such as science, the environment, French, and debating. These activities promote community, friendship, and school commitment and further enhance skills developed in class. Students are encouraged to try a selection of different experiences that will be in balance with their other academic and personal obligations. Registration for co-curricular activities occurs at the beginning of each term.

The House System

Every student in the Junior School belongs to a House. Each House has students from grades 1 to 7 and provides an opportunity for House activities and meetings that promote cross-grade relationships and foster a sense of community within the school. School spirit and competition are developed by collecting House points. The Sports Day Cup is awarded to the winning House on Sports Day. The Gordon Cup is awarded in the final awards presentation in June to the overall winning House. The four Houses in the Junior School are Hummingbirds, Robins, Swallows, and Wrens.

Hummingbirds - Yellow

Robins - Red

Swallows - Blue

Wrens - Purple

Music

The classroom music program is extensive and offers many interesting opportunities for learning through the Orff program. Co-curricular activities expand and enrich the Junior School music curriculum.

Primary Choir

The choir practices once per week after school, from 3:20 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the music room. It is open to students in grades 2 and 3 for the first term and grades 1 to 3 for the second and third terms. The purpose of the choir is to provide students with a focused time where specific singing skills are taught and to give them the opportunity to experience music making as part of a larger community with students from other classes and grades. Any child who is interested in singing is welcome; there are no auditions. Music is selected from a wide variety of cultures and includes lively, fun songs as well as more serious repertoire. The choir performs at music concerts, school events and for the Junior School during assemblies.

Junior Choir

The Junior Choir is open to all students in grades 4 to 7. This activity allows every student to learn excellent choral singing skills. The choir has varied opportunities to perform at school events and in the community.

Athletics

Junior school athletics are inclusive and participatory. All students who can commit to regular attendance at practices and games are included on the teams. Proper athletic uniform is expected at meets or games. Students may participate in their individual Houses in intramurals, which are held twice per cycle during the year, and on Sports Day.
