Inspiring Creativity
At Crofton House School, we encourage students to let their imaginations soar. Our extensive creative arts curriculum, which includes drama, home economics, music and visual arts is enhanced with superior resources and an innovative teaching faculty. While our specific curricula are diverse, we share a common philosophy of fostering creativity through appreciation, expression and skill development.
Each subject offers required courses at grade 8 and elective courses from Grade 9 through Grade 12. We also offer and sponsor a wide variety of co-curricular activities.
Drama
The Crofton House School dramatic arts program is designed to encourage students to discover and nurture their imaginations as both creative actors and innovative collaborators. Students follow a sequential program that introduces a variety of contemporary and traditional acting techniques while fostering skills in teamwork, self-esteem and performance. Throughout grades 8 to 12, students develop theatrical, communication and leadership skills through communal and individual projects. Students will study various theatrical techniques, play-building, script analysis, theatrical history and performance. Every year, each grade has the opportunity to see a theatrical production within the Vancouver theatre community, including Bard on the Beach, the Playhouse Theatre, Arts Club Theatre and the Stanley Theatre.
Students and staff are also able to participate in varying degrees with the annual school production, including performing, technical crew and backstage. Crofton House productions bring in professional members of the theatre community and offer the students the practical experience of working with set designers, make-up artists and lighting designers.
Home Economics
Crofton House School offers a comprehensive Home Economics program designed to provide students with experience and knowledge which will develop attitudes, skills and techniques to enable them to function effectively as individuals and as members of families and the broader community. Emphasis is on the acquisition and mastery of knowledge and practical skills in the areas of Food Studies and Textile studies.
Music
Music is an inclusive and integral part of life from the earliest grades. In the senior school, the music program develops students’ performance and composition skills. A wide range of vocal and orchestral ensembles provides performance opportunities and experiences for both singers and instrumentalists.
The Crofton House School senior music program is committed to fostering the musical and artistic growth of our young musicians through the experience of choral singing. The program is also expanding to include greater opportunities for participation in instrumental music. The senior school believes in the potential of every student to be expressive in Crofton’s music community and beyond.
Visual Arts
The Crofton House School Visual Arts program offers students the opportunity to learn about many forms of art in order to gain knowledge and skills that will enable them to explore their creative potential and enrich their lives. The visual art courses are designed to accommodate a wide range of interests, provide a variety of media, experiences, techniques and concepts for artistic expression appropriate for each grade level. A strong aspect of the philosophy of the visual arts program is supported by the research like that of the Manitoba Artists in Healthcare (MAH) that recognizes the role that creative expression can play in improving an individual's sense of well being.
