Athletics

Mission

It is the philosophy of CHS that every girl be encouraged to be physically active in her pursuit of athletic excellence. The athletics program is designed to engage the maximum number of students in as many areas as possible. In the Junior School, participation, fair play, and skill development are emphasized. In the Senior School, there is an increased emphasis on competition. In addition, alternate athletic activities are offered that reflect student interest and encourage participation. Crofton House recognizes the important role that athletic involvement plays in fostering school spirit.

CHS is a member of the Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Association (VSSAA), Independent Schools Association (ISA), Lower Mainland Independent Secondary Schools Athletic Association (LMISSAA) and British Columbia School Sports (BCSS). Therefore, CHS competes in all ISA championships and in the Lower Mainland Independent Leagues to qualify for Zone and Provincial Championships. CHS upholds the BCSS constitution and complies with all bylaws.

Competitive Teams

Athletic teams are coached by professional, experienced mentors – in many cases they are former provincial or national team members, from a variety of athletic disciplines, who are passionate about training successive generations of CHS athletes. CHS is a member of the Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Association (VSSAA), Independent Schools Association (ISA), Lower Mainland Independent Secondary Schools Athletic Association (LMISSAA) and British Columbia School Sports (BCSS). Intramurals

For those who are less competitive yet want to stay active, an inviting and inclusive intramural sports program brings students of all athletic abilities together in the pursuit of energetic fun. Drop-in activities and special events are an excellent opportunity for girls to learn new skills, exercise and make new friends.

Facilities

The CHS athletic facilities provide well-equipped, professional settings for sports teams and physical education programs. The school's weight and cardio room, located in Chan Hall, houses new workout equipment specifically engineered and sized for young women. Two gymnasiums and Kent Field round out the Crofton House athletic facilities.

Goals

To provide opportunities for students to strive for excellence in the particular sport(s) chosen, through attaining the following objectives:

  • Achieve a greater sense of personal growth in meaningful and challenging situations
  • Set goals as an individual member of a group and determine the prerequisites to achieve these goals
  • Develop lifelong recreational or competitive interests
  • Participate in group activities which allow for the development of social skills and sportsmanship
  • Face situations where they can encounter stress and develop self-control
  • Improve physical fitness and skill development
  • Encourage interest in all school activities and develop school spirit

Athletics is an essential part of a balanced education program. Student athletes are held to a high academic standard and we expect all who represent CHS to conduct themselves in a manner which is a credit to themselves, the coaches, the department of athletics, and Crofton House School.
