Outdoor Education
2009-2010 Program
Outdoor Education is an integral part of the curriculum at Crofton House School. We provide our students with unique outdoor education opportunities every year to complement the academic programs that are the foundation of learning in our school community.
Goals
- Outdoor Skills
Safely introduce students to a variety of outdoor activities. - Personal and Intra-Personal Development
- Environmental Awareness
- Academic Integration
Recognize outdoor education is part of the total learning experience and can include many subject areas (social studies, science, math, English, history, geography, physical education, CAPP, etc.)
The outdoor education trips have been such significant experiences for our students in the past that we encourage your daughter to make every effort to attend her trips. Students will only be exempt from trips for medical reasons or extraordinary circumstances. There will be a parent/student information meeting held at the school prior to each trip. To support our risk management policies and procedures it is imperative that parents attend these sessions to understand the unique nature of each trip.
The cost of each trip varies depending on location, accommodations, transportation requirements, etc. Approximate costs of each trip will be recharged to your account in the preceding summer and any necessary adjustments will be made after the trip is completed.

Attendance
The outdoor education trips have been such significant experiences for our students in the past that we encourage your daughter to make every effort to attend her trips. Students will only be exempt from trips for medical reasons or extraordinary circumstances since the outdoor education program is a mandatory part of the CHS curriculum. If your daughter is unable to attend for medical purposes a doctor's note will be required for reimbursement. If you have a specific reason for why your daughter is unable to attend any outdoor education trip, you are required to send a note and/or contact Karen McCulla (Director of the Senior School) and Nancy Symons (Coordinator of Outdoor Education) as soon as possible. If attendance is not possible, your daughter will be expected at school for those days and will be assigned an outdoor education project.
Costs
The cost of each trip varies depending on location, accommodations, transportation requirements, etc. Approximate costs of each trip will be recharged to your account in the preceding summer and any necessary adjustments will be made after the trip is completed. A comprehensive outline of trip costs will be issued to you on a yearly basis.
