English+ Program

The English Plus (English+) program at Crofton House is an EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program designed by an English language specialist to help students achieve the academic English fluency needed for high school and to prepare them for success in their post-secondary studies. This highly immersive five-year program is for students entering Grade 8 whose first language is not English but who have had some schooling, in or outside of Canada, where English is the language of instruction.

Entry to English+ requires an English Plus Assessment to determine if a student is the right fit for the program. Additional program fees apply.

Program Outline

The English+ program provides students from Grades 8 through 12 with additional English language instruction that is over and above the regular BC curriculum to help them excel in their English studies. They receive support in the classroom as well as through group tutorial sessions, one-to-one support, and outings that complement class projects and provide opportunities to use their academic English in real-life situations. Students in English+ attend all regular classes with their grade-level classmates every year and reduce one elective to accommodate the additional English+ tutorial (called Tutorial+) and support time.

Read the detailed English+ program description in the Academic Handbook on page 37.

Applying for English+

The English+ program is available to families with daughters entering Grade 8 who:

  • Meet CHS admission requirements. We welcome applicants who show passion and commitment to their education, a strong desire to explore their own potential, and who will engage in the community, both inside and outside of the classroom. The same process and documentation is required for the English+ application process as a regular Grade 8 application with the addition of an English+ assessment.
  • Meet the English language proficiency requirements. Successful applicants are students whose first language is not English but have had some schooling where English is the language of instruction. Proficiency is determined through an English+ Assessment, created by CM Global ($75) and administered by Crofton House School in November.

To be considered for the English+ program, families must select “YES” in the English+ Program portion of the admissions application and complete the English+ Assessment. Students who have applied to Crofton House will be notified at the Grade 8 shortlist whether they will continue on in the admissions process.

Please refer to How to Apply for information on the Crofton House admissions process and to Admissions FAQs for important dates.
