Learning the Land, Step by Step

It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and rather than being in their classroom, a Grade 2 class is in the Junior School atrium, cross-legged and listening intently to Ms Hare, Ivy Compass Program Teacher, Junior School. Underneath the class, a map spans the whole of the atrium floor—and while the shape is Canada, the words listed across it are new to many students.

Where province names are often listed, there are Indigenous names of places and languages.

The map, Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada, offers students the chance to continue learning about Indigenous peoples and Indigenous ways of knowing in an innovative way. It provides a unique opportunity for students to walk, explore and learn, step by step. Read more...
