Financial Assistance: FAQs

Do you offer financial assistance?

Yes, to qualifying families whose daughter is applying for Grade 8 entry only.  Assuming there are no changes to the family’s financial situation, financial assistance will continue through to grade 12. Financial assistance covers both tuition and program support.

What costs does financial assistance cover?

Financial assistance will offset the full or partial cost of attending CHS, including tuition fees, textbooks, technology, participating in co-curricular activities and other program experiences.

Will I receive financial assistance each year?

Families must complete the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) every year. Financial assistance bursaries are renewed annually provided there is continued demonstrated financial need. If there is a substantial change in your family’s circumstances, financial assistance may be adjusted to reflect the change.

How do I apply for financial assistance?

The application for financial assistance is separate from the application for admission. Both must be submitted in order to be considered for financial assistance. Candidates wishing to apply for financial assistance are required to complete and submit the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application form through Apple Financial Services, which will be available October 1.

To be considered for the 2018-2019 academic year, financial assistance applications are to be completed no later than December 1

What is the policy for divorced or separated parents applying for financial assistance?

Both the custodial parent and the non-custodial parent are to complete the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application as stated in the instructions provided.  If either parent remarries, their spouse must also submit the required tax forms.

How are financial assistance decisions made?

Financial assistance is based on demonstrated financial need and is determined on a case-by-case basis. Apple Financial Services will confidentially assess all FA applications and provide the school with unbiased evaluations of the financial resources available to each applicant family. This includes but is not limited to, the parent or guardian’s gross family income, net income, assets and liabilities, and information about dependents. Also taken into consideration are other expenditures, national standards for variations in size of family, the number of children, cost of living, and a host of specific family circumstances.

The analysis provided by Apple Financial is used to assist the CHS Bursary Committee in making their final decisions. Applications for financial assistance are reviewed and evaluated independently from admission applications.

If financial assistance is awarded, this information is communicated at the time of the offer of admission.

Will a family’s assets other than income be considered?

Assets are considered in the needs-analysis process, and families with considerable assets may be deemed to be outside the spirit and intent of the financial assistance bursary program.

How do I know if I’ll qualify for financial assistance, and for how much?

There are no predetermined levels or ranges used to determine financial assistance eligibility. As noted above, many other factors impact on financial assistance eligibility beyond family income and dependent children.

If financial assistance is awarded, this information will be communicated at the time of the offer of admission.

Does the school assist with the costs associated with applying?

Yes. As a new family applying for grade 8 and applying for financial assistance, the fees associated with the CHS admission application might be a barrier. If so, you are invited to submit a fee waiver request.

Once approved, one or more of the following fees may be waived:

  • The CHS application fee of $350
  • The online Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application fee of $100
  • The SSAT registration fee of $132 USD.

When are decisions made?

Financial assistance decisions are made by the Bursary Committee in January and are communicated to families at the same time as the offer of admission.

In order to be considered for the 2018-19 academic year the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application is required to be submitted to Apple Financial Services by December 1.

What is the deadline for financial assistance applications?

To be considered for the 2018-2019 academic year, Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application for Grade 8 applicants and returning families are to be completed no later than December 1

Tips for Financial Assistance Applicants

Be prepared

Review the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) requirements and gather the information you need before completing the forms (copies of tax returns and other documentation, including any previous applications). Apple Financial Services provides an FAQ to help answer any preliminary questions.

Allow plenty of time

Financial assistance applications can seem overwhelming and take time. Don’t wait until the last minute to apply. Mistakes could adversely affect your application and can be difficult to rectify.

Fill out the form completely

An incomplete form will cause a delay in receiving a decision. Meet all deadlines and even submit the application early if possible. Don’t forget to hit “submit” and receive acknowledgement of receipt.

Do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Team with any questions at 604 266 5423 or admissions@croftonhouse.ca. Please communicate directly to us any special circumstances or family considerations that do not translate well into the application.
