Learning at Crofton House

Learning here is thoughtfully designed to meet the unique needs and learning preferences of girls, fostering their natural curiosity, agency, and love of learning.

Our approach is both girl-centred and aimed at supporting the whole girl—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. When girls feel valued, understood, and empowered, they thrive both academically and personally.

The CHS Learning Framework reflects how girls learn best—by feeling seen and valued, being encouraged to take risks and ask bold questions, taking ownership of their learning, and working together to explore, create and innovate.

The framework, developed with our staff who specialize in girl-centred learning and incorporating the latest pedagogical research, articulates how we approach teaching and learning at Crofton House. Underpinned by the CHS Identity and our School values, the framework also reflects the principles of the BC Curriculum and is fundamentally informed by the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning.

At the heart of the framework are two fundamental concepts:

  • Belonging, agency, and competence are interlinked and fundamental to a deeper learning experience. When students feel connected to adults, peers, and place, and have a sense of ownership over their learning, they are more engaged and, as a result, develop their understanding and skills more effectively.
  • Adopting a growth mindset is crucial to any successful learning journey. When students believe that they can grow their ability through effort, they are more likely to persevere and achieve better outcomes.

Here at Crofton House, we continually strive for meaningful, student-centred, and collaborative learning. It’s not only about what girls learn, but how they learn—through choice, connection, and challenge in a community that celebrates their individuality, nurtures their potential and empowers them as learners.  We

This living framework evolves alongside our students, preparing them to thrive in a changing world and to lead with courage, creativity and citizenship.

Why have a Learning Framework?

  • It helps articulate our existing approach to teaching and learning in a way that coherently aligns with other elements of the School’s identity.
  • It provides shared language, understanding, and expectations amongst staff, students, and parents.
  • It anchors decision-making in pedagogy and curriculum, and ensures coherence in strategic choice
  • It supports professional dialogue, development, collaboration and collective efficacy.
